*insert a picture of me blowing party horn here*

HAPPY 5th BIRTHDAY! and let’s just pretend that you didn’t see the belated in brackets. oh and pardon the black-and-white party hat. i blame the school printers for being strictly black and white in the dorms. yes, i’m sorry chobani. but i had midterms and fall break right after! i’m a college girl just trying to get by school, ya know? but because you’re one of my favorites of ALL times, i would like to pay a small tribute to you <3

again, happy 5TH birthday!

————————————————————————————————–

dear chobani,

your deliciousness has made me become obsessed with you and consequently, i’ve gone on multiple chobani shopping sprees.

as you can see here:

and here:

and you make my smoothies. like i can’t make smoothies without you because you’re the one that makes smoothies so thick, creamy, and satisfying. not to mention the protein punch you give!

mmm berry smoothie love <3

oh and did i tell you that you’re never missing from my overnight oats. because without you, my overnight oats are too watery. i’d like to say that i’ve mastered the chobani : milk : oats ratio for overnight oats.

dear chobani,

i will always love you. like forever.

#CHICAGO

HI FRIENDS!

we have fall break so i’m at my friend’s in chicago so i’m sorry i haven’t posted in so long!

this is how my saturday morning started:

yes, that would be trix. and yes, it reminded me of my childhood. i mean my favorite childhood cereal isn’t trix but it still reminded me of the good ol’ days! i also had a couple biscuits with jam. yummo! haven’t had biscuits in a really long time so it tasted really good.

and then we went to downtown chicago! parked at water towers, shopped, walked around michigan avenue, and then around dinner time, we headed to gino’s east.

we actually went to giordano’s first but the line was ridiculous and i’ve already been there so we walked over to gino’s east.

we started with mozzarella sticks and spinach artichoke dip.

mozzarella sticks were eh. it was crispy but the cheese inside was not stretchy. but the spinach artichoke dip was good! i’ve never actually had spinach artichoke dip with toasted baguettes but it was good! i don’t know if i prefer it with chips or toasted baguettes. what do you think?

and you KNOW we ordered deep dish. half veggie, half meaty legend.

as much as i love bacon and pulled pork (like seriously),  i haven’t been able to eat pork since working with pigs! and it’s got me thinking about the sources of the meat we eat. i actually haven’t had meat (except for a gite of chicken) for about 2-3 weeks now. i’m not going to go vegetarian because i don’t like to put a label on my diet but i’m definitely a more conscious meat eater now!

me and my best friend with our deep dish! <3 she’s like my sister but if i said sister, i thought you guys would be confused so i just said bestie ;)

the pizza was definitely good! the crust was crispy but was a little flavorless and the veggies were seriously lacking. and the choice of veggies, i thought, were poor. i mean i don’t know about you guys but i’m definitely not a fan of cube cut zucchini type veggies on my pizza.

i was hungrier when i sat down to eat at giordano’s but i remember their pizza being a lot better.

this is a picture from last year.

so is this! *flashback!* hehe note my glasses. anyways, their pizza was a lot more “full” and “deep-dish” like.

i guess i’m a giordano’s fan!

anyways, we were supposed to head to downtown chicago again today but the tornado warning has us locked up inside the house… boo… don’t know what’s in store today but i guess we’ll play it by ear!

talk to you guys later!

for those who have tried them both, giordano’s or gino’s east? and do you prefer deep dish or regular / thin crust pizza?

it was a GOOD day

**skip to the bottom if you don’t want to see a picture of a dead pig! you’ve been warned!

today was very busy but busy in a good way! today was a GOOD day.

today, i did my first surgical suture.

her name was “berry”. i named her because i thought she deserved a name. i work in a surgical lab and we’re working on a project called “donations after cardiac death (DCD)”. i won’t go into much details but she was an acute pig so i got to do the suture!

i want to be a surgeon one day so this just makes me so happy. i was in the lab from 8am till 7pm but it was all spent in the OR and learning about the cardio vascular system. my friends say i light up whenever i talk about my time at the lab :)

which brings me to this:

(source)

i mean it’s so true. i refuse to get up for a 9am orgo 2 class but i spring out of bed for an 8am surgery. see? do what you love and love what you do!

and being in the lab and OR all day meant barely time for food. i had half a banana and a bit of scrambled eggs at 9:30am. and at 3pm i was hungry so i had to grab something quick. i was SO glad i had this in my bag:

premier protein bar! it was really good with good nutritional stats and ingredients. i mean if you know me i’m an ingredient snob and there’s SO many protein bars that have worse ingredients than candy bars. i’ll do another post on this later but let’s just say this saved my stomach. and my sanity.

since i haven’t really eaten all day, my dinner was big! let’s just say that i had 4 bowls of mashed potatoes. oh and you know what’s sad? i actually liked the mashed potatoes. i think i forgot what real mashed potatoes taste like. darn you dining hall!

oh and this:

i go to u of michigan so we’re all about maize and blue so we sometimes have maize and blue ice creams. they’re “raspberry & chocolate” flavored but all i taste is chocolate honestly. and let’s be real. this is more green and yellow. but i’m not complaining! i gobbled the whole thing up.

tomorrow, i have orgo 2 at 9am, then in the OR again from 10am-2pm! then i’m off to CHICAGOOOOO! it’s fall break so my friends and i are driving down there and staying until tuesday. i’m SO EXCITED! freight fest and deep dish pizza, here i come!

alright i’m already tired so i’m gonna get some sleep! if i don’t get distracted by twitter ;)

byeee!

#EXAMMODE

hello there! long time no talk, right? sorry i had midterms! and a girl’s gotta study. anyways, i wanted to share the picture above, which was one of my tweets yesterday. academics and doing well is really important to me so over the years, i’ve learned various things about myself & obtained tips and tricks that seems obvious but tend to forget sometimes.

since i don’t have any food pictures (because it’s mainly consisted of protein bars and scarfing down something before rushing off to classes / review sessions), i’m going to share some tips for exam time! i probably should have posted this earlier but maybe you can keep in mind for next time? :)

anyways, tips for you to OWN your next exam :)

(source)

1. take advantage of power naps

as much as people say “get a good night’s sleep before the exam”, most people don’t because they’re nervous or because they’re cramming as much as possible the night before. now, everybody is different but i do really well with power naps. but no more than 20 minutes! this is why some people can’t do power naps, because you sleep for way too long. 20 minutes is great, 30 minutes is pushing it.

(source)

2. keep snacks with you at all times

during exams, everything seems more hectic and there’s a lot more that you have to do. review sessions, study groups, discussions, studying with friends, and etc. i know that for me, i often don’t have time to go to the dining hall to eat or wait in line (grrrrrr) in the cafés. so in order to avoid hunger, i keep snacks in my bag! nuts, protein bars, fruits are my go-to’s. i’ll do another post on my favorite snacks another time :)

(source)

3. exercise

who has the time to exercise when you have an orgo 2 exam to study for? well what if i told you will be able to focus better if you squeezed a quick workout sesh in? i’m sure you can squeeze in 20 minutes of exercise. i mean think about the times that you spend checking facebook or emails. a minute here, a minute there, will eventually build up to 20 minutes, right? if you think about it like that, it’s not so bad! :)

oh and let me show you how quirky i can get. i have these things that i always have to do during exam time or for exams so i thought i’d share. maybe i’m not the only one!

-i always use 1 writing utensil. that one and that one only shall i write with. what is it? it’s this one:

this pen has red, blue, black, green pen AND a mechanical pencil. this is so helpful in classes (ESPECIALLY orgo) because when i write mechanisms, i like to write in different colors and when i do that, i don’t have to switch pens every time! i don’t know if i can write my exam with another pen. a couple days ago, i lost it for a few hours and i almost had a heart attack. i’m actually convinced that i’ll do worse on an exam if i wrote it in another writing utensil.

-i don’t eat sugar before exams. that means cookies, ice cream, and etc. i don’t know why but i can’t focus with the sugary taste in my mouth and even if i don’t feel nervous, i think i am because sugar doesn’t sit well in my stomach.

-i live in sweats. well i’m sure that 1. i live in sweats during non-exam time anyways and 2. everybody else lives in sweats during exam time too, but i have to be really comfortable when i’m studying. like i’m talking full force sweat pants and hoodies. not even yoga pants. i’m talking loose sweat pants and huge & warm hoodies people!

see how quirky i am? please tell me i’m not the only one.

anyways, REMEMBER! stay well hydrated, rested, and fed. i know studying is important but you can’t study with an unhealthy mind & body!

when your will power goes down with the sun

Posted on

(source)

sometimes, it’s bye bye sun and bye bye will power. but why does that happen? huh?

i thought this was the perfect time for this post since it’s exam time! i have 2 exams next week and i haven’t been getting much sleep lately. which means that i’m constantly tired. now i’ve noticed that i eat mindlessly when i’m tired so it’s important to remind myself of that.

now, why does will power go down with the sun?

1. you use all your willpower during the day.
2. you’re sluggish and tired so you look for quick energy, a.k.a. junk food.
3. you’ve been eating “healthy” but in reality, you’ve been starving yourself so by nighttime, you’re ravenous.
4. at the end of the day, you finally get to watch tv, which is when you get the munchies and eat mindlessly.

so, what can you do about it?

1. eat more substantially during the day. you might think this won’t work but trust me when i say it does. if you have a big, healthy breakfast, you’re more likely to eat less than those who don’t. and i also speak from experience!
2. don’t keep junk in your house. if it’s not there, you can’t eat it!
3. tv time is not munchies time. you keep reminding yourself that.
4. sluggish? tired? get to bed early or take a nap!
5. after work and before dinner, go for a quick workout or at least a walk. it’ll leave you more energized than energy depleted.
6. if you only have one or two more hours to go until bed time, sip on water and think about breakfast :) in other words, don’t eat.
7. plan healthy snacks beforehand!!

ideas for healthy post-dinner munchies:

-air popped popcorn
-plain, nonfat chobani with a sprinkle of nuts or a spoonful of nut butter<br>
-veggies with hummus
-a protein shake with your choice of protein powder, water / milk, and optionally, spinach
-a handful of nuts
-homemade chocolate milk with silk pure almond milk, cocoa powder, and stevia
-cottage cheese with sliced fruits
-a small bowl of fruits like berries

if you have any other ideas, please share!

11 life lessons from my dog

Posted on

today i came across this post on carrtsncake. i’ve read it before but every time i read it, it makes my heart melt! so i had to do one myself!

my baby’s name is po-rong and i’ve had her ever since she was born (i had her mom as well). she just turned 12 last june 30th, and now, after those 12 years, i don’t know what i would do without her.

anyways, without further ado, here are 11 life lessons i’ve learned from my baby.

1. get enough sleep.

yawning is ok.

so is dreaming about food.

2. guard the ones you love and keep them close.

3. stretch often.

4. learn to accept that things happen. even if it’s bad hair days.

5. practice patience.

6. never pass up the opportunity to go for a walk outside.

7. kiss your loved ones

8. work for what you want (in this case, attention)

and sometimes, it’s ok to just ask (for a belly rub)

9. live in the moment. even if that means eating a cookie (or a biscuit) as big as you.

10. fight for things that are worth fighting for.

11. smile like you mean it.

there’s so much more that i’ve learned from her but if i had to pick 11, these would be it.

love you and miss you kiddo! <3 see you in 7  months!
